Period Diary: Privacy FirstiPhone privacy for a one-time price
Why do people leave Flo?
Flo is one of the most popular period apps in the US, with 4.74 stars from 2,005,621 US App Store ratings and 4.7 stars from 5.16 million Google Play reviews, and the people who leave it usually give one of three reasons.
The first is privacy, because in June 2021 the FTC finalized an order with Flo over allegations that it shared users' sensitive health data with Facebook and Google, and in August 2025 a California jury found that Meta violated state privacy law by collecting menstrual health data from Flo.
The second is the paywall, and of the 50 most recent US App Store reviews we read in mid October 2026, 31 gave Flo fewer than four stars, with one reviewer writing that Flo asked for a subscription "at the very end of a long setup process". The third is price, because the App Store lists Flo Premium at five prices from $1.99 to $59.99 without saying how long each one lasts.

Is Flo safe to keep using?
Flo has changed since 2021, and whether that is enough is your call. The FTC order requires Flo to get consent before sharing health data and to submit to an independent review, and Anonymous Mode, added in 2022, lets you use Flo without personal identification. Its Apple privacy label still lists purchases, location, identifiers and usage data as "Data Used to Track You", so if privacy is your only worry, try Anonymous Mode before you switch.
How we picked the apps
On top of store listings and privacy labels, we looked for official action such as an FTC order and left out apps with no update in 18 months. Hello Phase ranks first for keeping predictions, symptom patterns and an estimated hormone chart free on Android without an account, ads or third-party trackers, and drip ranks second as the open source pick for any phone.

All three apps below work without an account and keep your log on your phone. drip and Euki declare that they collect no data at all and Hello Phase declares that it shares none, and our private period tracker apps list goes deeper.
Hello Phase
Best Flo alternative on Android- $39.99 for optional Plus
- Android
- No Play rating yet, 1K+ installs
- Privacy declaration
- Play "No data shared", some data collected
What stands out
- Hello Phase is our app, built for people who want a daily cycle routine on Android without handing over an account.
- You log your period, flow, one of eight moods, 16 symptoms and a note, and the free plan predicts your next three periods as a date range that narrows as it learns, next to an estimated estrogen and progesterone chart with a "you are here" marker.
- After 10 logged days or two full cycles it shows your top symptom pattern each cycle, and you can export every logged day as a CSV file, or a one-page PDF summary, for free.
Watch out for
- It is Android only, and with 1K+ installs it has no Google Play rating yet.
- The hormone chart is drawn from your cycle length and ovulation day, so it is an estimate and never a lab reading.
See the pricing page, the Hello Phase FAQ and our guide to the best hormone tracker apps, which compares estimated charts with urine tests.

If you want birth control or better accuracy
A period app is not birth control unless it is cleared for that use, and calendar predictions can be far off. A 2016 study found that only one website and three apps predicted the precise fertile window, and a 2020 study of app users found that only 12.4% actually had a 28-day cycle.
Natural Cycles
FDA-cleared birth control- $149.99
- iPhone, Android
- 4.79 (30,293) App Store
- 4.4 (23.5K) Google Play
- Privacy declaration
- Apple "Data Used to Track You", Play "No data shared"
What stands out
- In August 2018 the FDA allowed Natural Cycles to be marketed as the first contraceptive app sold directly to consumers, and 510(k) clearances in 2023 and 2025 added temperature from Apple Watch and Oura Ring.
- The company says it is 93% effective with typical use and 98% effective when used as directed.
Watch out for
- It is the most expensive app here, and a July 2026 Google Play reviewer said the app changed their period length and found the price high.
On the App Store and Google Play, and at naturalcycles.com.
Price, account and privacy details
- Best for
- Birth control from an FDA-cleared app
- Price (US, checked 26 Oct 2026)
- Annual $149.99 or Monthly $21.99 in the App Store. Google Play lists no in-app purchases, so the Android price is not shown in the store.

- iPhone and Android
- Account
- Required. A Go Anonymous option separates your identity from your fertility data.
- Privacy
- Apple label "Data Used to Track You" for contact info. Google Play Data safety says no data is shared.

Clue Period & Cycle Tracker
A large, well-rated app with 200+ symptoms- $39.99 for Clue Plus
- iPhone, Android
- 4.76 (406,450) App Store
- 4.5 (1.5M) Google Play
- Privacy declaration
- Apple "Data Used to Track You", Play lists some data shared
What stands out
- If you liked how much Flo covers, Clue is the closest large option, with modes for perimenopause, trying to conceive and pregnancy, and connections to Apple Watch, Oura, WHOOP, Withings and Fitbit.
- The FDA cleared a product called Clue Birth Control in February 2021, although we could not confirm how it is offered today.
Watch out for
- Clue will not solve a paywall complaint, since Google Play reviewers wrote "99% of features are paywalled" in September 2026 and "I get at least 2 promotions for Clue Plus every time I use the app" in 2025.
On the App Store and Google Play, and the Clue Plus page.

- A large, well-rated swap on both phones that tracks 200+ symptoms

Apple Health Cycle Tracking
Built in and free on iPhone- Free
- iPhone, Apple Watch
- Built in, no store rating

Watch out for
- The fertile window is a six-day estimate from the traditional calendar method, and wrist temperature estimates are retrospective, so they tell you when you likely ovulated after the fact.

How do I move my data out of Flo?
We could not confirm Flo's current export steps, so check the Flo help center or ask Flo support for a copy of your data. Write down your recent period start dates before you delete Flo, since we could not confirm that any app here imports a Flo file, and cancel Flo Premium in the store where you bought it.
Apps we left out and why
TechCrunch reported in July 2026 that Mozilla research found Stardust shared users' health data with an analytics firm, even though its Google Play Data safety section says no data is shared. In May 2023 the FTC announced a proposed order barring Premom from sharing health data for advertising, and in 2020 California's attorney general settled with Glow, maker of Eve by Glow, over security flaws.
Ovia requires an account and lists health and fitness data as shared on Google Play, Period Tracker Period Calendar by ABISHKKING says your data is "never uploaded or shared" while its Apple label lists identifiers and usage data as used to track you, and Kindara has not been updated on the App Store since September 2021.
How to choose
On Android, start with Hello Phase, or drip if open source code matters most to you. If you used Flo mainly for PMS or PMDD symptoms, the Hello Phase guide to the best PMDD tracker apps compares apps with daily severity ratings, and our best period tracker apps list covers every other need.
